Once the pieces were ready to go on the lid, I started to patch the breaks and gouges in the wood. In order to minimize expenses and labor hours, I elected to fill the spaces in the trim veneer instead of replacing it for the time being. I also applied wood putty to gouges in the lid to promote a stronger hold for the wood glue and prevent bubbling/cracks in the future.
While waiting for the putty to dry, I spent some time testing stains on the cedar pieces to get an idea of the color consistency I should expect from the finished product. If possible, we'd like to match the lid with the natural "wet look" of the chest body as closely as possible.
